Equatorial sundial, Augsburg type.
Brass, engraved. Diameter approx. 6.4 cm. 12.7 g.
Augsburg-type equatorial sundial with folding plumb line, polar arc, and scale ring. Engraved on the underside with the polar heights of various cities, primarily in Central Europe: Augsburg, Paris, Kraków, Prague, Leipzig, Cologne, and London, as well as the maker And. Vogl. (Andreas Vogler, active 1766–1800, an Augsburg-based manufacturer primarily of sundials, who took over the workshop of his brother Johann Georg Vogler after the latter’s death in 1765). Slight signs of age and wear; some traces of polishing compound remain in the engravings.
An equatorial sundial is a type of sundial in which the dial lies parallel to the plane of the equator and the shadow rod (pole) is aligned parallel to the Earth’s axis. The main advantage is that the sun illuminates the dial from above in summer and from below in winter, allowing for consistent readings.
