Patinated bronze, green marble base. Signed "Barrias," numbered "1216." 49 x 34 x 19.5 cm. 17.55 kg.
A seated woman in traditional, rural clothing, tilting her head to the side to receive a kiss on the cheek from her small, naked son. Slight signs of age and wear; patina partially worn away; marble base minimally chipped.
Louis-Ernest Barrias: French sculptor, student of Léon Cogniet; beginning in 1854, first as an apprentice in Pierre-Jules Cavelier’s studio, then from 1857 in François Jouffroy’s studio; elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1884 and appointed a lecturer at the École de Beaux-Arts, in 1894 he became head of the master’s studio for sculpture at the Académie des Beaux-Arts and in 1897 vice president of the Institut de France.
