Art Nouveau bust of a laughing woman wearing a headdress
Cast metal, burnished. Marked "G. van der Straeten 1889," with the addition "Epreuve d'àrtiste." 51 x 35 x 25 cm. 16.8 kg.
Bust of a smiling young woman with an opulent headdress, her head turned to the side, her gaze cast coquettishly to the side. Burnishing partially damaged, some scratches and dents, a patched hole on the back of the headdress, slight patina formation (white rust).
If this is indeed by Georges van der Straeten, then: Belgian sculptor (1856 Ghent – 1941 ibid.), from 1882 he was a student of the sculptors Jef Lambeaux and Gustave Kasteleyn; his preferred materials were bronze, chryselephantine, and terracotta.
