Patinated bronze. Signed "E. Fremiet," titled "Cavalier Romain." 40 x 28 x 12 cm. 5.55 kg.
Roman soldier seated on his horse with a shield, sword, and raised lance. Patina partially worn away; a crack running around the soldier’s hip.
Emmanuel Frémiet: French sculptor; admitted to the renowned École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris; apprenticed to Jacques Christophe Werner; from 1855 to 1859, he created a series of equestrian statues for the French Emperor Napoleon III; served as director of the sculpture department at the Louvre.
