Bronze figure of a Germanic warrior
Patinated bronze, red stone base, green stone plinth. Inscribed “P. Kowalczewski.” H 50 cm / 39.5 cm. 6.95 kg.
Standing, armed warrior in a fur-like robe, left arm outstretched toward the sky and holding a lance in his right hand. Lance broken, patina worn, some scratches, partial patina formation (verdigris), chips on the stone base and plinth.
Paul Ludwig Kowalczewski: German sculptor; studied for three years at the Berlin Academy of Arts beginning in 1895; his work primarily consisted of busts and Art Nouveau sculptures in bronze depicting secular scenes of the working class, as well as warriors, archers, victory poses, and occasionally birds.
