"La Bienfaisance"
Patinated bronze. Signed "Math. Moreau"; inscription on the base: "La Bienfaisance par Math. Moreau Médaille d’Honneur au Salon." H 46.5 cm. 8.21 kg.
On a round pedestal with an inscribed plaque stands a lightly clothed young woman, reaching with one arm toward a boy and wrapping him in a cloth with her other arm. Signs of age and wear; patina worn away; pedestal dented.
If this is by Mathurin Moreau, then: Thieme/Becker: 1822 Dijon – 1912 Paris, sculptor in Paris, studied under his father J.-B. Moreau as well as under Claude Ramey and Albert Dumont.
