The Grand Ducal Palace in Badenweiler was originally built in the 16th century as an administrative building, but was used intermittently as a residence beginning in the 18th century. Between 1887 and 1888, it underwent systematic renovation to serve as a summer residence for the Grand Ducal couple Friedrich I of Baden (1826–1907) and his wife Luise of Prussia (1838–1923) in the Neo-Renaissance style. The two picture plates presented here fit into this design.
Provenance: Each bears a former provenance label on the reverse Badenweiler Castle Inventory, page 49, item no. 4 [or 5].
