Bust of a woman in Empire-style dress
Terracotta. Inscribed “Chinard a Lyon l'an XI.” H 70 cm. 35 kg.
Bust of a young woman with her gaze reverently lowered, wearing Empire-style clothing. A brooch in the shape of Medusa’s head is attached below the bust, and a veil covers her hair. A comparable terracotta bust from the years 1800–1805 is housed in the Musée Cognacq-Jay, where it is listed as a presumed depiction of Juliette Récamier. Signs of age and wear, a few chipped areas, cracks in the base.
Joseph Chinard: French sculptor, a student of the court painter Nonnotte, who later worked in the studio of the sculptor Barth. Blaise, who spent time in Rome, was a member of the Lyon Academy and became the official artist of the city of Lyon.
