Patinated bronze. Marked "J. Clesinger Rome 1861," foundry mark "F. Barbedienne Fondeur." 22 x 49 x 20 cm. 7.8 kg.
Sensual depiction of Cleopatra reclining on a bed, holding in her right hand the poisonous snake that is to bring about her death, while her left arm is dramatically outstretched. Patina partially worn, some scratches and dents, slight patina formation (verdigris).
Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger: French sculptor and painter, was a student of Bertel Thorvaldsen.
