Each beech veneered and solid, each dark stained.
Unmarked "Fournierstuhl" with round seat in Brand-Muscheldekor, on 4 slightly bent legs with foot hoops, h ca. 88 cm, seat height ca. 47 cm | Unmarked armchair with striped seat in the Brand decor and 5-fold braced backrest, on 4 slightly bent legs with hoops on the feet, H ca. 95 cm, seat approx. 47 cm. Each with signs of age / use.
Bentwood is bent by a process developed by Michael Thonet around 1830 under steam. After the privilege granted in 1856 to "manufacture furniture from solid bent wood" was cancelled in 1869, numerous furniture factories sprang up - including J. & J. Kohn, who further developed the process so that edged wood rods could be processed as well.
