Art Nouveau design armchair with round upholstered seat, wide curved shoulder board and vertically shortened backrest, feet each with brass application; black and white checkered cover. Matching K (2283). Restored ready for living, upholstery and cover added.
Bentwood is bent by a process developed by Michael Thonet around 1830 under steam. After the privilege granted in 1856 to "manufacture furniture from solid bent wood" was canceled in 1869, numerous furniture factories were established - including J. & J. Kohn, who further developed the process so that edged wood rods could also be processed.
