Guckkastenbild "Auerbachs Hof, Leipzig"
Color copperplate engraving. Signed in the plate.
Passepartout cutout: 29 x 40 cm. Framed & behind glass : 44.5 x 53.5 cm.
Side-inverted view of the important trading court "Auerbachs Hof" with Naschmarkt in Leipzig, inscribed "Le Cour d'Auerbach à Leipzig", in German and French "Auerbachs-Hof in Leipzig", "Le Cour d'Auerbach a Leipzic". Stick stained, traces of grip.
To create optical illusions, the peep-show box was a popular fairground attraction from the 2nd half of the 18th century, which presented the viewer graphics with deceptively real perspective and shaped the image of the "wide world" with views of sights, exotic scenes or theatrical representations.
