Picture box sheet "Vue de l'Université d'Augsbourg"
Colored copperplate engraving. Circa 1780, Basset in Paris.
Sheet: 33 x 50 cm, in mount: 49 x 60.5 cm. Framed.
Side-inverted depiction of the University of Augsburg with staffage figures and legend, inscribed "Vue perspective de l'Universite d'Augsbourg fondé par l'Eveque Julien". Grip and crease marks, foxing, somewhat soiled, corners torn.
For the creation of optical illusions, the peep-box was a popular fairground attraction from the 2nd half of the 18th century, which presented the viewer with graphics with deceptively real perspective and shaped the image of the "wide world" with views of sights, exotic scenes or theatrical representations.
