Alexander Gerbig was a German painter and graphic artist. In 1900 he began studying at the Dresden School of Applied Arts, working part-time as a decorative painter. He encourages his friend Max Pechstein to do the same. Both eventually continued their studies at the Dresden Art Academy. During this time they also lived together. Gerbig studied there with R. Müller, Zwintscher and Kuehl and received the Villa Romana Prize in 1913 as well as a one-year scholarship from the city of Florence. Throughout his life there was a close correspondence with regular meetings between him and Pechstein.
