Colored illustrations of monkeys, water birds, fish, snakes, lizards, whales, caterpillars and butterflies, plants but also illustrations of Herculaneum, volcanoes, horse racing, Alpine telegraphy and much more. One colored copperplate page is usually accompanied by four pages of text with explanations in German, French, English and Italian. Not paginated throughout, but mixed by subject, but all belong to Volume 4. half leather binding. A larger corner of the cover is missing, signs of age and wear but tight binding, foxing.
This series was an encyclopedic non-fiction and textbook, the largest book project of Bertuch, the successful publishing entrepreneur of Weimar Classicism.
