An attractive, finely and exceedingly detailed painted motif from Italian folk life. A popular genre scene with visually entertaining value. Original stretcher frame. Remains of an old adhesive label from Galerie Commeter, Hamburg on the reverse. Profiled wash gold frame. Alt doubled.
Schmitt, portrait and genre painter, son and pupil of Georg Philipp, brother of Guido Philipp. Studied at the Academy in Karlsruhe. Active in Rome 1872-1880, in Saarbrücken 1881-1886, then resident in Karlsruhe. The Commeter Gallery is the oldest art gallery in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. It was founded in 1821 by Georg Ernst Harzen, where the Kunstverein Hamburg also resided. Already in 1824 Harzen handed over the management to Johann Matthias Commeter * partner auction Bergmann.
