Renaissance enamel miniature: John the Baptist points to the sacrificial lamb. Limoges.

Polychrome painter's enamel, heightened with gold, on lightly cambered copper panel, colorless counter enamel; ebony frame. 9 x 6,5 cm, frame 13 x 11 cm.
Picture dominated by intense blue and green in contrast to the light incarnate, some of which is slightly executed in relief. The last prophet of the Old Testament points in deep night to the Lamb before him. Chipped at the edge, slightly hairline cracked, gold partly rubbed.
The enamel painter family Pénicaud lived in Limoges and begins with Nardon/Léonard (c. 1470 - 1542/43). Jean III lived in the 2nd half of the 16th century and was influenced by the Fontainebleau school. His time also saw the first use of punched panels with translucent counter enamel.
