Westerwald roller jug with floral medallion and birds.

Grey, salt-glazed stoneware with incised and stamped decoration, cobalt blue painting and dotted decoration. H 26.5 cm.
Cylindrical shape with a strongly beveled lip and pointed ear handle. The front with a curved almond medallion with circular reserve, heart motifs and stylized flower branches, flanked by birds and flowers. Pewter lid with urn finial, monogrammed and dated "B.G. 1835", hallmarked inside (Adolf Paul Böhmer, master from 1820 in Dresden). Fine crack in the mouth area, pewter with signs of age and wear.
The Westerwald stoneware offered in this auction was collected by Albrecht von der Gabelentz (1873-1933), chamberlain at the ducal court in Altenburg. He was appointed director of the Lindenau Museum in 1912. After the duke abdicated in 1918, Albrecht von der Gabelentz also took over the management of the palace museum on a voluntary basis. The collection was continued by his son Georg (1906-1954).
Provenance : From Thuringian aristocratic property. Restitution property with inventory number of the Altenburg Residential Palace, formerly part of the von der Gabelentz family collection at Poschwitz Castle.
