Westerwald roller jug with floral tendrils.
18th century
Grey, salt-glazed stoneware with incised and stamped decoration, cobalt blue painting and dotted decoration. H 26.5 cm.
Cylindrical shape with pointed ear handle. A floral ornament with tendril decoration on the front. Flat pewter lid with engraving, monogrammed and dated "J.G.E. 1796", ball finial, punched inside. Handle with fire crack, hairline crack below the handle, pewter with signs of age and wear.
The Westerwald stoneware offered in this auction was collected by Albrecht von der Gabelentz (1873-1933), chamberlain at the ducal court in Altenburg. He was appointed director of the Lindenau Museum in 1912. After the duke abdicated in 1918, Albrecht von der Gabelentz also took over the management of the palace museum on a voluntary basis. The collection was continued by his son Georg (1906-1954).
Provenance : From Thuringian aristocratic property. Restitution property with inventory number of the Altenburg Residential Palace, formerly part of the von der Gabelentz family collection at Poschwitz Castle.
