2 Westerwald roller jugs with animals.
18th century
Grey, salt-glazed stoneware with incised and stamped decoration, cobalt blue painting and dotted decoration. H 22.5 and 23 cm.
Cylinder jugs with smoothly painted ear handles. 1x jumping horse between tendril decoration, 1x abstract floral ornament with deer jumping on the side. Each with engraved, partly dated pewter lid, acorn or ball finial, 1x hallmarked inside, linen stain. Signs of age and wear, each with cracked base, partly bumped.
The Westerwald stoneware offered in this auction was collected by Albrecht von der Gabelentz (1873-1933), chamberlain at the ducal court in Altenburg. He was appointed director of the Lindenau Museum in 1912. After the duke abdicated in 1918, Albrecht von der Gabelentz also took over the management of the palace museum on a voluntary basis. The collection was continued by his son Georg (1906-1954).
Provenance : From Thuringian aristocratic property. Restitution property with inventory number of the Altenburg Residential Palace, formerly part of the von der Gabelentz family collection at Poschwitz Castle.
