Berndt studied at the Dresden Academy of Art from 1899 to 1906. He worked as a war painter during the First World War. Despite his membership of the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste during the Nazi era, some of his works were considered "degenerate art". Berndt's style features impressionist and expressionist elements, as well as later elements of New Objectivity.
