Richard Gessner entered the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1913, but had to interrupt his studies after just one year due to military service. In 1917, he became a war painter and co-founder of the avant-garde artists' association "Das Junge Rheinland" (1919). Most of these works were lost in bombing raids during the Second World War.
