Apelles was one of the most important painters of antiquity, a contemporary of Alexander the Great. Kampaspe, also known as Pankaste, was a Greek hetaera and lover of Alexander the Great. Alexander is said to have brought her to Apelles so that he could paint her naked. On this occasion, Apelles fell in love with her, whereupon Alexander magnanimously gave his concubine to the painter. Original profiled gold frame. Craquelé, frame partially damaged.
