The painting is a reduced version of the right side altar in the collegiate church of Schönenwerd, painted in 1774, presumably a commissioned work. With original correspondence: The painting was brought to Switzerland in 1965 and scientifically examined by Dr. G. Loertscher, Solothurn, with confirmation from the Christkatholisches Pfarramt Schönenwerd, 14.08.1966. Swiss Institute for Art Research: Confirmation of receipt for authentication, 21.11.1984. Reply letter dated 12.05.1985, archive extract, 13.05.1985 "We have photographed the painting and recorded it in our archive under no. 55'013 as an autograph work by Joseph Esperlin". Blackened profile frame. Partial paint flaking in the margins.
* Esperlin, portrait and history painter, from 1731 pupil of Francesco Trevisani in Rome, 1736 in Basel, from 1740 in Biberach and from 1745 resident in Scheer. Worked for the Count of Waldburg-Scheer. From 1757 worked alternately in Basel, Lucerne and Zurich, 1773 in Solothurn, already achieved a high reputation during his lifetime.

Provenance : * Partnerauktion Bergmann * The painting was owned by an Aschaffenburg art connoisseur, passed into the possession of an old Obernburg family in 1855, from whom the master butcher Franz Krimmer acquired it before 1952. The original newspaper article from 1952 is available.
