Patinated bronze, wooden base, wooden stele. Germany. 1976. Without signature, engraved plate "Thomas Mann Ehrenbürger der Stadt Weimar Porträt 1976 von Eberhard Reppold, Weimar" on base. H 62 / 171 cm. Sculpture 28.4 kg.
The writer Thomas Mann is shown in this bronze portrait bust with strongly modeled, striking facial features and very lively surface structure. Patina minimally rubbed.
According to the consignor, 3 casts of this bronze exist. It is known that during Thomas Mann's visit to Weimar in 1949 on the occasion of his appointment as an honorary citizen, photographs were taken by Ernst Schäfer, on the basis of which the sculpture was later created. The sculpture was commissioned by the Kulturbund Nordhausen, which had intended the sculpture for a school bearing the name of Thomas Mann. On March 27, 2000, Frido Mann visited Weimar and Reppold's studio. There, a dedication was made in Frido Mann's book "Brasa", a copy of which is available. The sculpture was cast by the Lauchhammer company.
The bust is accompanied by a booklet commemorating the artist's 75th birthday, Weimar 2009.
