Round plate with a loving depiction of a mother and child, surrounded by a mandorla, yellow stars and a yellow rim. On the cover of the magazine "Jugend - Münchner illustrierte Wochenzeitschrift für Kunst und Leben" from December 25, 1897, Volume II, No. 52, the same mother-child depiction with the signature "Hans Christiansen Paris" at the bottom right. The printed original was created during his stay in Paris between 1895 and 1899. Margin with several glass chips, binding of the magazine defective, lower edge torn, last page(s) missing.
Hans Christiansen (1866-1945) was a German artisan and painter of the Art Nouveau style. After studying at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts, he worked as a decorative painter in Hamburg. in 1895, he went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. He was commissioned by the Cologne chocolate producer Ludwig Stollwerck to design collectible pictures for Stollwerck albums, including the "Sternbilder" series. In 1899 he was appointed by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse to the Darmstadt artists' colony on the Mathildenhöhe. Together with Joseph Maria Olbrich and Peter Behrens, he was one of the first seven members and designed artisan furniture, ceramics, stained glass and Art Nouveau jewelry. As part of the first exhibition of the artists' colony "Document of German Art" in 1901, he completely redesigned his own house, which he called "Villa in Rosen". He designed a series of wallpaper patterns. He also worked as a graphic artist for the magazine "Die Jugend". From 1911, he lectured at the Wiesbaden School of Arts and Crafts. He belonged to the Freie Künstlerschaft Wiesbaden.
