“Günther offered himself to the Wittelsbach faction as a candidate to succeed Ludwig of Bavaria on the German throne. He thus became the rival king to Charles IV, whose election was not recognized as legitimate by the Wittelsbachs, since it had taken place at the instigation of Pope Clement VI while Ludwig of Bavaria was still alive.
