Rare Westerwald jug with frieze depicting "Daniel in the lions' den".

Gray, salt-glazed stoneware with model decoration and cobalt blue painting. H 20.5 cm.
Cylindrical shape with richly profiled walls and 2 blue throats each in the upper and lower area, in the centre an overlay decoration with the biblical figure of Daniel, stylized lions and angels placed side by side in 3 fields and inscribed, ridged beaded handle with rolled lower base. Later added, flat pewter lid with beaded rim and spigot pusher, monogrammed "M.W.". Cracks in the mouth area and on the stand.
The Westerwald stoneware offered in this auction was collected by Albrecht von der Gabelentz (1873-1933), chamberlain at the ducal court in Altenburg. He was appointed director of the Lindenau Museum in 1912. After the duke's abdication in 1918, Albrecht von der Gabelentz also took over the management of the palace museum on a voluntary basis. The collection was continued by his son Georg (1906-1954).
Provenance : From Thuringian aristocratic property. Restitution property with inventory number of the Altenburg Residential Palace, formerly part of the von der Gabelentz family collection at Poschwitz Castle.
