Bismuth box with biblical scene: Abraham sacrifices Isaac.
16th / 17th century, southern Germany, probably Nuremberg.
Solid beech, polychrome painted on all sides over bismuth primer, reddish marbled interior. 11 x 27 x 19 cm.
On the hinged lid in polychrome framing the scene from the Old Testament: Abraham stands with raised sword behind his kneeling son at the sacrificial fire, while an angel prevents the sacrifice and points to the ram; in the picture an explanatory written panel. On all sides of the box ornamental floral vines in the red-framed sham coffered. Stronger signs of age / use, 1 cheek of the lid replaced.
Bismuth primer gives the painting a metallic sheen.
