LEHMBRUCK, Wilhelm (1881 Duisburg - 1919 Berlin)
Large bronze sculpture: Hagen Torso
Bronze, dark patina. Height: 71 cm. 15.9 kg.
Posthumous casting, inscribed on the back of the base: W. Lehmbruck. Model year: 1910-1911. The torso received its title "Hagener Torso" after the collector and founder of the Folkwang Museum in Hagen, Karl Ernst Osthaus, acquired a stone cast in 1912. Further stone casts can be found in numerous museums; there were very few bronze casts of the figure during Lehmbruck's lifetime. In Paris, Lehmbruck found his own sculptural style and expression. The "Small Female Torso" was the first work that was conceived as a torso from the outset. Julius Meier-Graefe wrote in 1920: "That most beautiful of his torsos, the girl's body with the small head and the various cut-off thighs, is not conceivable with extremities, has never had any". Patina partially rubbed.
